Timeout when trying to test SMTP email configuration

Description

While trying to set up email, I configured SMTP settings as instructed (for Amazon SES, fwiw) and tried to send a test email. SMTP settings visible on the email screen matched expectation (after restarting rhodecode), but sending a test mail caused the UI to hang, then 504 (Gateway timeout).

End url for the 504 is:

mydomain.com/_admin/settings/email/update

If this is due to am SMTP configuration issue, it would be nicer to see an error message onscreen.
